Bear Lake Map

May 17th,2018
Ed Eubank - 05/17/18

This was the lure of choice that Darin Pugmire told me would be the one...sure enough it did just as he said. With the location, depth, and speed that we where told to run it proved to be exactly what this monster 32" lake trout was after. We ended up catching multiple trout but no cutthroat at all.

Until next time...

Darin Pugmire of Pugstone Sporting in Garden City UT set me up with a Mag Lip 5.0 green and orange lure and a bottle of Cisco Scent. I trolled at 2mph with the scented lure along the East shore of Bear Lake about 1 mile South of the Idaho border. Within 30 minutes I caught this 24 inch Lake Trout.

Cutthroat/ Lake Trout Derby - 05/14/18

I had a great time during the Bear Lake Cutthroat/ Lake Trout derby. I was able to land this 38" Mac. He gave me an awesome fight. After pictures he was released back in the lake for another day. The cuts were being awful stubborn as the spawn approaches. I also landed a 25, 15, 10, and a few 5 pound Macs during my time at the derby. Thanks Darin Pugmire for putting this on.

Lake Trout Update
Josh Borg - 04/29/18

Lakers are Hungry! After a morning of fighting rough water we were pulling up gear on our way back to the marina and picked up this 31" 13.8 lb Laker in about 40 feet of water, trolling 15 ft lure depth. My little girl caught the biggest of the year so far. This fish put up a good fight for over 10 mins.

Sculpin spawning fishing report
Dave Hawkins - 04/25/18

Fished east side 4/18. Bear lake sculpin are spawning, fish are in close to shore in morning. Caught 20 lb Mac on fly rod in 20 ft water trolling cone head sculpin imitation. High water this year seems to have the sculpin more spread out compared to last year. Fishing was slow compared to last 2 years at this same time. Others fishing this area I talked with were fishless.

Bear Lake Sculpin / Cutthroat Spawn / Fishing Derby
Darin - 04/11/18

Well guys it is about that time again when the endemic Bear Lake Sculpin come into the shallows for their annual spawn. This is a great time for anglers to do well along the shorelines. Whether or not you have side planners or cast into, or from shore it is that time of year again.

The cutthroat trout are starting to color up and beginning the staging process before they come into spawn. I love this time of year when you can catch cutthroats and even lake trout that are coming in to shore to either feed or to spawn. The fishing techniques are endless, whether or not you have a boat or a pontoon, kayak, or canoe and even just casting from shore this is the time of year to do so.

We have several options that can be of your benefit while out on the lake. We are now renting out Pontoon paddle boats. Outcast has some amazing designs making it simple to get out on the water or to drift down the river we have them here for rent or to buy. They rent from $45 - $130 a day to rent them out so if you come up and want to get out in some other depths of water while either fly fishing, spin fishing or even long lining we will have what is needed to simplify your catch and release trips.

So as of APRIL 15th the mouth to Swan Creek and Big Creek will be CLOSED. This is to protect those cutthroats that will be coming in to spawn. Make sure that you stay 1,000 feet from the high water mark or behind the buoys if they have them out. Also remember that the inlets to Fish Haven and St Charles (small or long arm) are all closed as well, that area requires you to be 300 yards off of the high water mark as well. Respect that law so that it can help to preserve our fishery here on Bear Lake.

All cutthroat trout that have all fins intact must be immediately released back to the lake...even if you hook one in the gills and it is going to bleed out and die you still have to release them. If this does happen make sure to pop their air bladder so they can sink to the bottom of the lake and at least turning into something that can benefit the lake and the trout that are within it and not the birds of prey.

The best areas to fish from shore, boat, or pontoon, canoe, kayak are outside the Marina in Garden City...Cisco Beach...South Eden Camp Ground Area, 2nd and 1st Point, and then off of the north end of the lake near the North Beach where Mud Lake flows into Bear Lake and along the pier as well.

We have multiple gear, lures, spoons, flies, and other needed items while fishing this lake. Stop in and we can help you find the spot to fish and the gear that you will have the best luck using. If you troll you can use several spoons or lures that are essential for those who like trolling. We use YOZURI, LUHR JENSEN, ACME, COYOTE, LIVE TARGET, YAKIMA along with several others. Use the ones that you can troll with variable speed limits and ones that have great fast and erratic action. This will will help to catch those trout that are not necessarily out to be feeding but just can't pass up your lure because of their nature.

Those who jig we have all sorts of different and specialty colored and built tubes. We also have what is called a double hook jig which will increase your odds by 50% to those that usually get a way. We use tubes that are around 6" long with an 1" diameter. They are proven to be the best catch rate tubes on the market.

For those that are fishing from shore or by a non motorized craft we have all sorts of spoons and spinners that will be the go too. Blue Fox, Krocodile, Kastmaster, Dare Devil and several others are the go too. If you are fly fishing look no further because we have some of those irresistible flies that you can't leave behind. They range in color and style and patterns. Stop by and check those out as well.

We also have a fishing derby that is coming up and starting on May 4 and running through May 12th. This is a catch and release derby that is a 100% CASH BACK derby. 1st Place takes 60% of the cash and 30% goes to 2nd and 10% goes to 3rd place overall. We also have an additional derby prize that goes to those that enter. It is for the largest Lake Trout. The prize back on this starts with a CAMP CHEF SMOKER! 2nd Place comes in with a 50L CALCUTTA COOLER and 3rd Place take home a $80 Bear Trapper and Bear Lake Pizza Gift Certificate.
Lets help make this a big enough derby that it can bring some big money back to those top 3 biggest fisherman :)
