Some Notes regarding common weather-related expressions:

• Red sky at morning, sailors take warning. Red sky at night sailors delight.
  Red sky at night means high pressure west, red sky in the morning means high pressure to the east and low pressure coming in. This had nothing to do with extracurricular evening activities commonly associated with sailors!
• Hens scratching and mares tails make tall ships carry low sails
  Hens scratching, mares tails refer to high altitude cirrus clouds or the fore runners of low pressure systems keep you eye on the incoming clouds - if they get lower and thicker chances are a storm is coming. long foretold, long last: short notice, soon past if the incoming clouds take for like ever getting here, the front is a slow mover, if they are here quickly, most likely they will leave quickly as well
• The further the sight, the nearer the rain
  When you can see clearly it is due to the thinner air and turbulence of low pressure, high pressure has dirty air
• A backing wind says storm is nigh, a veering wind clears the sky
  This refers to the counterclockwise wind direction of low pressure (starting from the north to the west and then southwest) indicates a low pressure system is approaching. veering wind means going from South West to West to North indicating the low has moved east and good weather is on the way
• Summer fog will scorch a hog
  This means that clear skies on summer nights radiate heat and drop surface temperatures until moisture condenses forming fog. Fog rarely forms unless the air is still - both are characteristic of high pressure systems. In the morning, the sun comes out, burns off the fog and sunburns any hog laying out
• When dew is on the grass, rain will never come to pass
  Same reason for the fog: clear skies, radiating heat, surface temperature drop, condensation and dew forms however
• When grass is dry before morning light, look for rain before night
• Ring around the moon, rain before noon, ring around the sun rain before night is done
  Atmospheric ice crystals scatter light creating halos around the sun and moon - look for cirrus clouds as a fore runner - typical time frame is 12 to 18 hours prior to storm activity
• When stars begin to muddle, the earth becomes a puddle or twinkle twinkle little star:
  Indicates increased humidity and/or high winds disturbing the upper atmosphere: in either case, an indication of poor weather approaching. also look for star color: humid air absorbs more red and green so blue stars/moon indicate rain
• When forests murmur and mountains roar, close your windows and shut the doors
  Sound transmission relies on several variables one of which is humidity. The humid air associated with low pressure transmits sounds much better than high pressure. If you can see clearly now as well as hear clearly, rain is on the way
• If with your nose you smell the day, stormy weather is on the way
  Humidity helps transmits smells as well as sound. Plants give off oils to soil which are exuded as humidity rises giving the distinctive smell of "rain"
• If a robin sings in the bush, expect weather to be coarse. If a robin sings from the barn, expect weather to be warm.
  Birds fly much easier in high pressure than in low pressure and flight height becomes an indicator of high/low pressure.
• Smokes rising high, clears the sky. When smoke descends, good weather ends
  Smoke rising high indicates a high lapse rate, temperature getting colder with elevation - high pressure. Smoke flattening out indicates low lapse rates, and low pressure systems
